Realtors have to always put safety first. We often do not realize how much danger we are exposed to on a daily basis. We walk into houses we’ve never seen before, not knowing if there is danger inside. We travel with strangers in our vehicles not knowing if we are putting ourselves in danger. We have Open Houses that any stranger can walk into and risk our safety over and over again.
What should every Realtor be doing now to ensure their safety?
- Take a self defense course. It is important to understand that if you only take one class you will not be able to effectively protect yourself. A one time course may give you a base knowledge, nevertheless, it is all about muscle memory and recognizing what to do in any type of attack. There are many places to learn self defense at Moti Horenstein Krav Maga.
- Arm yourselves. There are many different weapons to choose from. They range from retractile sticks to guns. Many people do not believe in the necessity of a firearm. I have heard many stories of female Realtors surviving attacks because they had a gun. Florida has a five day waiting period and you will need a license to carry the firearm.
- Use a Safety app. These are the top rated apps by Realtors.
- Have a Safety Partner. Designate someone to know where you will be and with whom you will be meeting. Set a time frame of when you expect to be back. Make sure to have that Safety Partner call you if they do now hear from you within that time frame.
- Make sure you do not appear vulnerable. This means having the client walk before you, never giving them your back. Know your exits, never let your guard down and get distracted by looking at your phone. Always be alert to your surroundings. Here is a safety tip video for Open Houses.
